Eswatini, officially the Kingdom of Eswatini formerly known as Swaziland until officially renamed in 2018 is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west, and south. At no more than 200km north to south and 130km east to west, Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in Africa with a total area of 17,364km2. Despite this, its climate and topography are diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous Highveld to a hot and dry Lowveld. The population of 1.3million is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis and the language is Swazi or siSwati in native form.

Reed Dance Ceremony in Swaziland
The reed dance is a tradition dating back to the 1940s, during which tens of thousands of unmarried women from around Swaziland gather to participate in an 8-day event at the Queen Mother’s Royal Residence. As part of the tradition, the girls cut reeds and carry them back to the Royal Residence where they are used as windbreakers for the perimeter.
